Description

HAS – Helix Art Space is proud to present the first major solo exhibition of Ting Wang.

‘Loop of Looking’ begins with the gaze, never fixed, always shifting between those who look and those who are looked at.

Through a range of works, from a new site-specific installation to textile sculptures, and animation, Wang reflects on how visibility shapes everyday experience, particularly for those constantly under observation. In these moments, the gaze is rarely neutral, for it can define, separate, or position someone inside or outside a collective “we.” Often, it moves almost unnoticed, carrying assumptions, projections, and inherited ways of seeing.

Transparency runs throughout Wang’s practice as both material and metaphor. Inspired by the dual nature of windows and glass, her works create spaces where exposure and separation coexist. In this space of exchange, looking becomes shared rather than one-sided, as the observer is invited to look in while simultaneously being made aware of their own presence. Boundaries shift with the viewer, creating moments where perception circulates and changes.

Within the constant loop of looking and being looked at, the hierarchy of vision collapses, and the structures that shape perception briefly give way to change.

‘Loop of Looking’ is curated by Yul Cho and Ruoxi Gao, Curators-in-Residence at HAS – Helix Art Space.

Artist Statement

Ting Wang is a Chinese-Swedish artist living in Sweden. Her experience of relocating into a new context has made displacement a long-standing theme of her artwork.

We live in a world experiencing mass cultural and identity displacement. Global homogenization and trends of cultural hybridization are reducing cultural diversity; moreover, successive generations of technology amplify the gap between industrial production and human craftsmanship.

We are alienated by the society we have created. Through her experiments and works, she seeks to explore and address questions such as: What are the forms and postures through which one can interact with ones alienated identity and cultural roots? How can hand-made practices, tradition, and heritage reorientate and participate in the new context?

Her practice is textile based multi-disciplinary art. Her interactive installations combine sound, sculpture, film and mechanical structures. Through these performative media, she wants to create an environment or a communication channel that involves the audience in her discussions.

Ting Wang holds an MFA degree from Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Sweden.
